University of Michigan, Class of '69 photograph album, 1869.

Fat leather album embossed with gold ivy and black trim, and four white half balls on each cover. The title, in gold, with "Wm. A. Butler, Jr."is on the cover. Intricate gold locks are in tact. The first page says "the American Photograph Album" in decorate gold and green. The album includes 30 pp. of carte-de-visite portraits of men, all of which are single portraits, except for three group photographs, in one of which the men are wearing mortar boards. All of the portraits were taken by Revenaugh & Co., Ann Arbor (Mich.). One image is of a paddle wheel and was taken by Barr & Young, Army Photographers, Vicksburg (Miss.). At least seven of the portraits are autographed. The remaining 21 pp. are empty. The album is clearly a graduation memory album, documenting the members of the University of Michigan graduation class of 1869. Some of the portraits may be professors, but most are clearly graduates. It is also clear from the high quality and professional look of the album, which is in excellent condition, that this was professionally manufactured, probably by Revenaugh & Co., and sold to the graduates who then had their names embossed on the cover.
